The BWF Project "Road to The Hague" Takes a New Turn Following Lithuania's Request to the ICC in The Hague

The  Project "Road to The Hague" (belaruswomen.org), initiated by the Belarus Women's Foundation (BWF), may take a new turn following Lithuania's official request to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.

On September 30, 2024, Lithuania officially filed a lawsuit with the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate crimes against humanity committed by the authoritarian Lukashenko regime: Statement of ICC Prosecutor Karim A.A. Khan KC on receipt of a referral by the Republic of Lithuania | International Criminal Court (icc-cpi.int)

Expressing support and hope for an ICC ruling, the Belarus Women's Foundation recalls that as early as the fall of 2020, we began documenting the testimonies of women—victims of abuse and torture at Akrestina: Сollection of eyewitness testomonies evidencing the Lukashenka crimes (belaruswomen.org).

In May 2021, the Belarus Women's Foundation sent a „Request for Investigation“ to the International Criminal Court (ICC) at The Hague, alleging that Lukashenkо were complicit in crimes against humanity (belaruswomen.org).

Unfortunately, the legal process for this case has not yet been initiated.

We are confident that now, along with the request submitted by the Republic of Lithuania (Lithuania refers the Situation in Belarus to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to investigate the crimes against humanity committed by the authoritarian regime of Lukashenko - The Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Lithuania (lrv.lt), the charges will have strong grounds to hold Lukashenko accountable for crimes against humanity.

We hope that the evidence gathered by the Belarus Women's Foundation will also be used as part of the prosecution’s case.

All information is available on the Belarus Women's Foundation website: Project "Road to The Hague" (belaruswomen.org).

May justice and law prevail,

and may Lukashenko be given a direct path to The Hague!

Long live Belarus!
