UN Rights Body Launches Probe to Investigate Abuses in Belarus

Advocated for by Belarusian and international rights groups, including Human Rights Watch, the new body is tasked with investigating ongoing abuses, collecting evidence of international crimes, and identifying those responsible, building on the UN Human Rights Office’s own investigation.

Additionally, the resolution extended the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Belarus, crucial for civil society given the suppression of human rights work.

This resolution, supported by countries from all regions, reflects the increasing international concern regarding worsening of human rights crisis in Belarus.

Belarusian authorities persist in silencing independent voices, with hundreds detained on politically motivated charges and facing mistreatment. Rights defenders, including members of Viasna, are serving unjust sentences. Human rights lawyers are also facing retaliation.

Currently, avenues for justice within Belarus are limited, and international forums offer few remedies. In 2022, Belarus blocked victims of human rights violations from bringing complaints before the UN’s Human Rights Committee.

The UN Human Rights Office, through independent investigations, has determined that grave violations in Belarus may constitute crimes against humanity, justifying the robust response of today’s resolution.

While the new investigative body won't instantly resolve Belarus’ rights crisis, its work is crucial for holding perpetrators accountable and supporting survivors and rights defenders. Despite the ongoing liquidity crisis, UN leadership must ensure the new mechanism receives the necessary support and resources to begin its work promptly.
