#13 Volha Alsheuskaya

Volha Alsheuskaya is a great-granddaughter of Anastasiya Kupryianava, the patriot mother who lost her 5 sons in World War II. In the interview, Volha shares with Veronica Tsepkalo her experience of being an independent watcher during the presidential elections in 2010 and 2020 and her taking part in peaceful protests in her hometown Zhodzina. Volha also tells the details of her arrest on April 24 in a sauna where she gathered with her friends. For this simple party with friends, with no political agenda or even national symbols, she received a fine of ~$1100 - an unbelievable sum for a retired teacher while other people got even bigger fines or arrest of up to 25 days. Volha also explained why she wrote a letter to the city authorities and asked whether her family needed a permit to gather, as a long-standing family tradition, for a picnic on May 9 and honor the memory of her great grandmother and her sons, the youngest of whom was given the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union posthumously.
