Mary Pickford (1892-1979) was an American - Canadian actress and a legend of the silent film era.
As one of the most recognisable movie stars of her time, she used her popularity and public trust to promote numerous charitable causes.
In 1921, she set up the Motion Picture Relief Fund, an organization aimed at helping actors in financial need. In 1927, alongside several influential people in Hollywood, Pickford founded the American Film Academy.
