October 10, 2022 - 20th World Day Against the Death Penalty
“Everyone has the right to life” - Article 24 of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus. According to the same article, capital punishment is applied - the death penalty.
Belarus is the only state in Europe and Central Asia that uses the death penalty.
According to article 59 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus 275-Z of 07/09/1999:
“The death penalty cannot be imposed:
[…] women […]”. Over 300 death sentences have been handed down in Belarus over the years of independence.
On May 18, 2022, the so-called authorities of Belarus adopted a new law that introduces the death penalty for “an attempt to commit an act of terrorism”
According to the Viasna Human Rights Center, dozens of political activists have already been charged with "attempted terrorism".
In democratic countries, there is no death penalty, and if it is applied, then the execution of the death penalty is postponed for 20-25 years after the sentence is passed. This is done so that during this period additional evidence of the innocence of a person can be presented. After all, the worst thing is to pass a sentence on an innocent person and take the life of a person who did not commit a crime.
The Belarusian Women's Fund stands for the abolition of the death penalty in Belarus. Human life is the highest value and no one has the right to take it away.
