Edith Wharton (1862 –1937) was an American writer and designer.


During World War I she lived in France and dedicated herself to charitable efforts for refugees, the injured, the unemployed, and the displaced. 


For her remarkable efforts, she was bestowed the highest honour in France — Chevalier of the Legion of Honour.  


In 1921, she became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for her novel The Age of Innocence.
