Rita Levi-Montalcini (1909-2012) was an outstanding Italian neurobiologist.
She was awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly with colleague Stanley Cohen for the discovery of nerve growth factor.
Despite her father’s discouragement and Mussolini’s ban on Jews in the academic world, she eventually gained worldwide recognition for her contribution to medical science.
Throughout her life, she was engaged in charity and support of young scientists.
