Maria Nilsson (Swedish Parliament till 2022; since 2022 State Secretary, Ministry of Education & Research) for Maryia Uspenskaya: “The repression of the illegal president Aliaksandr Lukashenko must stop. The brave people of Belarus deserves to live in a free and democratic state where they decide through free and fair election who should govern the country. Maryia Uspenskaya is a Minsk resident and the widow of Andrei Zeltzer, who was killed on September 28, 2021, in his own apartment during a shootout with KGB officers. She has a minor son from her first marriage.
Maryia was detained the same day on suspicion of being an accomplice in the killing of KGB officer Dzmitry Fedosiuk. Initially, she was held at the Okrestina detention center (IVS), and later transferred to a pre-trial detention center (SIZO).
In early December 2021, it became known that Maryia had spent three weeks in the Novinki psychiatric hospital for a forensic psychiatric evaluation.
Charges indicted:
Art. 139 of the Criminal Code — Murder
May 31, 2022: Maryia's case began in the Minsk City Court in a closed hearing. The “judge” was Valiantsina Ziankevich.
Maryia was charged with complicity in the murder of KGB officer Dzmitry Fedosiuk under Articles 16 and Parts 5 & 10 of Part 2, Article 139 of the Criminal Code (murder of a person in connection with the performance of their official duties, committed in a manner dangerous to the public). Her case was considered under Clause 13 of Article 6 of the Criminal Procedure Code, as involving “a person who committed a socially dangerous act provided for by criminal law while in a state of insanity or who developed a mental illness after committing the act.”
At the trial, Maryia’s interests were represented by her mother; the political prisoner herself was not present at the hearings.
Court ruling on June 16, 2022: compulsory treatment in a psychiatric facility.
“Treatment until recovery” - the court does not set a fixed term.
A former cellmate of Maryia's at SIZO-1 shared:
“That’s when we learned that with us was the wife of the murdered Andrei Zeltzer - Maryia. When we entered the cell, one of the detained girls said to her: ‘Can I give you a hug?’ Masha immediately asked why. We told her we were deeply sorry and wanted to offer our condolences. She was shocked that so many people were being detained over comments about her husband.
Masha cried a lot because she couldn’t bury her husband or say goodbye to him. Sometimes she would zone out and say things like, ‘Wait, I need to go pay for the apartment.’ She was in such a state of shock that her mind kept returning to her past life — as if everything was still normal.
At Okrestina, officers treated her badly and called her ‘the chick with pink hair.’ We constantly fought with them, demanding they stop insulting women. We supported Masha as best we could. She was called for interrogations every day. She told us they didn’t beat her.
We thought we’d be released soon, so we memorized her address to visit her child and her mother after we got out. We hoped it was just 10 days for comments and we’d be freed.
We didn’t ask Masha what had happened in the apartment on September 28 — we didn’t want to retraumatize her. Even our own criminal cases didn’t mention it. But Masha did tell us that Andrei was doing well with cryptocurrency, and that right before the raid, he had withdrawn a large sum of money. Maybe that’s why they broke in.”

Марию задержали в тот же день по подозрению в соучастии в убийстве сотрудника КГБ Дмитрия Федосюка. Сначала женщину держали в ИВС на Окрестина, затем перевели в СИЗО. В начале декабря 2021 стало известно, что Мария Успенская три недели провела в Новинках — она была отправлена туда для прохождения психиатрической экспертизы.
Предъявлены обвинения:
ст. 139 Уголовного кодекса — Убийство
31.05.22 в Минском городском суде началось рассмотрение дела в закрытом режиме. "Судья" Валентина Зенькевич.
Мария обвинялась в соучастии в убийстве сотрудника КГБ Дмитрия Федосюка по ст. 16 и п.п. 5 и 10, ч. 2 ст. 139 Уголовного кодекса (убийство лица в связи с осуществлением им служебной деятельности, совершенное общеопасным способом). Ее дело рассматривали как в отношении "лица, совершившего общественно опасное деяние, предусмотренное уголовным законом, в состоянии невменяемости или заболевшее после совершения преступления психическим расстройством (заболеванием)" (п. 13 ст. 6 УПК).
На суде интересы Марии представляла ее мать, сама политзаключенная не присутствовала на заседаниях.
Решение суда 16.06.22 : принудительное лечение в психиатрическом стационаре
"Лечение до выздоровления" — срок не устанавливается судом.
Бывшая сокамерница Марии по СИЗО-1 рассказывала:
"Там мы узнали, что, оказывается, с нами вместе находится супруга убитого Андрея Зельцера – Мария. Когда мы зашли, то одна из наших задержанных девочек сказала ей: "Можно я вас обниму?" Маша сразу спросила, зачем это. Тогда мы сказали, что нам её очень жалко и хотим ей выразить свои соболезнования. Она была в шоке, что столько людей задерживают из-за комментариев про её мужа. Маша очень плакала, что не может похоронить мужа и не может с ним проститься. Иногда она выпадала и говорила: "Слушайте, а как это мне пойти за квартиру заплатить?" Человек был в состоянии такого дикого шока, что она возвращалась мыслями в прошлое, что у неё нормальная жизнь. На Окрестина сотрудники с ней обходились плохо и называли "тёлкой с розовыми волосами". Мы постоянно с ними ругались и говорили, чтобы они не смеют оскорблять женщин. Машу мы поддерживали, как мы могли. Каждый день её вызывали на допросы. Она говорила, что её не били. Мы думали, что нас скоро отпустят, поэтому запоминали адрес, чтобы выйти и навестить их ребёнка и маму Маши. Мы рассчитывали, что скоро выйдем и думали, что за комментарии нас 10 суток подержат и выпустят.
Мы не спрашивали у Маши, что происходило 28 сентября у них в квартире, чтобы не травмировать её. Даже в наших уголовных делах про это не было вообще ничего. Но Маша рассказала, что Андрей успешно занимался криптовалютами. И накануне того, как пришли к нему силовики, он снял очень крупную сумму денег. Возможно, это стало причиной, почему к нему вломились".
