Women political prisoners in Belarus are receiving extreme prison sentences.
- 52 women — sentenced to 5–21.5 years in a penal colony
- 36 women — sentenced to 1–4 years in a penal colony
- 12 women — unknown prison sentences
- 4 women — subjected to compulsory psychiatric treatment
- 18 women — in pre-trial detention (SIZO)
As of today, there are 122 women political prisoners in Belarus.
For some of these women, their prison sentences effectively mean the risk of spending the rest of their lives behind bars.
They Must Be Released Immediately
We state:
- no woman should be imprisoned on politically motivated charges;
- vulnerable humanitarian groups must not be subjected to prolonged imprisonment and inhumane treatment.
We demand:
- the immediate release of vulnerable humanitarian groups;
- the release and full rehabilitation of all women political prisoners;
- an end to the persecution of women and families for political reasons.
Particular attention must be paid to:
- mothers of minor children (Mothers of Minor Children (belaruswowen.org)
- women of retirement age (Women of Retirement Age (belaruswomen.org)
- women with serious health conditions
- women facing extreme prison sentences (Women Political Prisoners — Sentences (belaruswomen.org)
The continued politically motivated imprisonment of women in Belarus is inhumane. This requires an immediate international response.
